For this reason, WordPress uses a default category called Uncategorized.
It’s not a particularly nice word, but the description fits the purpose because you’ve published a post and haven’t assigned it to a suitable category. Assigning it to a suitable category helps your readers find the content that interests them. If you end up with a ton of posts in Uncategorized your blog won’t make any sense and will deliver a poor user experience.
Apart from these issues, assigning your posts to Uncategorized makes you look like you don’t know what you’re doing and looks unprofessional on a business blog. Which isn’t good if you’re out to impress potential new clients in particular sectors. It’s fair to say that some people won’t even notice.
Luckily, it’s really easy to change the default category to something more appropriate. In my case, most of the posts currently go into the WordPress category. So it makes sense to choose this one as the default.
How to Change the Default Post Category in WordPress
The simple three-step process goes like this:
1. Navigate to Settings > Writing.
2. Then choose an alternative category from the drop down menu.
3. Hit Save Changes.
After you’ve made this change, all future posts will be assigned to the new default category. If your focus switches to another subject in a month or two, you can change the default category again to make sure you publish those posts in the most suitable category.
Just as you’re about to hit publish on an exciting new blog post, it’s easy to forget about assigning a post to a category and adding tags, switching the default option could help you save a lot of work in the future. Especially if the permalinks on your site include the category name, as you may have to setup a redirect from the old post to the new one.
(HINT: Install the Redirection plugin – if you change the permalink of a post or page, it automatically creates a redirect for you. It’s a great plugin. I use on just about every site I work on.)
